Supporting Teenage Mothers: A Collective Responsibility for Improved Child Healthcare

Teenage pregnancy stigmatization is a major challenge in child healthcare, according to Mr Samuel Atuahene Antwi, a nutritionist at the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate. During a health promotion dialogue, Mr Antwi urged the public to end the stigmatization of teenage mothers and provide them with support to care for their children. He noted that inadequate parental care was a major problem in child healthcare, especially among teenage mothers, who are often unsupported and neglected to care for their children all by themselves.

Teenage mothers often face pressure from their peers and society, which discourages them from attending to their babies. This situation has led to a neglect of their children, which can result in poor health outcomes. However, some health facilities, such as the Tema General Hospital, have designated days for teenage mothers to access the maternity center. This measure aims to reduce the stigmatization of teenage mothers by providing them with an environment where they can interact with their peers.

Mr Antwi stated that adolescent health coordinators can also help teenage mothers disguise themselves to prevent them from being stigmatized or criticized by society. This measure is to ensure that teenage mothers receive the necessary care and support they need to care for their children. Mr Antwi advised teenage mothers to register with accredited healthcare facilities for regular check-ups and encouraged the public to support teenage mothers to care for their children.

For the most part, teenage mothers face significant challenges in caring for their children. However, this can be addressed by providing them with the necessary support and care they need. The public should refrain from stigmatizing teenage mothers, as this can further aggravate the problem. Health facilities should also develop programs and policies that cater specifically to teenage mothers to address the challenges they face. By doing so, teenage mothers can receive the care and support they need to raise healthy and happy children.
